Retired Chaplain Bucher, Jr., asks: “Have we a serious theologian in the PC(USA) (who) argues for having a U.S. flag in the sanctuary?”
While I am not a very “serious” theologian, I will say that I can see a place for the U.S. flag in our sanctuary, right near the inside exit, as we depart. Here are some of the reasons why: 1. To show the primacy of the Christian faith over nationality. Our Christian faith has priority and this is why it is down front. 2. To remind worshippers, as they leave, that they are to carry out their discipleship in the country in which they reside, for sure. As such, I would like all churches in the world to place the flag of their country in the same position. We are to share God’s eternal Truth to and, if possible, with civil power for the good of all. 3. To remind us that we are to be responsibly IN our respective countries with the causes of Jesus Christ, while not being OF the world. These causes include seeking justice, compassion, promoting egalitarianism, minimizing social boundaries, alleviating suffering caused by social structures, calling conscience to be informed about the gap between rich and poor and the consequences when we are not, etc. We are to attempt to challenge and/or change those things that do not weave tighter the fabric for human betterment. This is how we witness to the presence of God’s Administration (Kingdom) in our communities, for our communities’ welfare. 4. Similar to the above, to remind ourselves as we depart that true discipleship is to be lived and acted out in life and not something simply to be sung or shared only within our stained-glass ghettos on one day of the week. We ARE to “depart to serve.” The presence of the flag, as we depart, can remind us of this calling. This is the better way to prove a deeper, healthier love and loyalty for our own, or any, country.
